After a day and a half without internet, I finally got irritated enough to make the call and find out wtf was going on. Fact: My internet was killed without warning, because I quote "Our server has detected non-licenced material on your computer" Interestingly enough, that's ALL they would say, I asked a dozen or so questions and to every single one the response was the same. My opinion: I suspect, that qwest in their "quest" for a future monopoly is receiving 3rd party funding from an anonymous sources for running a search program designed to detect piracy. I'm basing this off a few assumptions - which I haven't yet had the time to run through having just acquired comcast again. So bear in mind these may be very wrong. A)As a couple of you know, I was having some fairly weird internet problems for 3-4 days leading up to the point they dc'd me. B)This to me suggests I was being watched - I just didn't realize it at the time. C)The repeated response when they were questioned. I don't believe it's possible for them to detect the data flowing through internet because of the way all the data is encrypted and decompressed. Even if it was - it's not feasible far too much CPU/RAM would be required to search through every user. Based on this assumption I made assumption D D)The program they designed to detect it, does scan your computer itself - they just can't admit to it. If i'm not mistaken that would fall under the 1986 computer fraud/privacy act? I think I was one of the first to experience it, and they probably looked at internet usage as their first search criteria. I don't download that much - BUT I do play games which require ALOT of downloading/uploading. Not all of this may be correct, infact, all of my opinions may be wrong. I haven't had the time or opportunity to research this yet. However if your using qwest I strongly suggest you move all "unlicenced material" to flash drives/dvds. Because if I'm right about anything, it means this is just the start of a new form of censorship. I suspect, an illegal censorship.. |

That's some fucked shit. The guy in our guild Snooks, he downloaded something like a Terabyte of copyrighted material in a 5 day period, and he got served with a RIAA notice via his cable company. I dont think they ever did anything to him, tho. |

You so CRAAZZYY!!

Tell them you did a direct 2 drive download of Aion, and the betas, whether you did or not and make the argument they're flagging you for bandwidth when it was a perfectly legal download. If you call a few more times eventually you might get a phone rep that cracks for you and at least gives you more information. |

At this point i've switched my ISP to comcast - my only other alternative here. However on the bright side, they openly admitted they will not track any downloading (while i'm sure they do - the point is that they don't care about any "unlicensed material i have." I just wanted y'all to be aware, although in retrospect as meanrock pointed out to me, it's not neccesary for them to determine the file is piracy, they could of just detected the port I was using. Although it's not a default piracy port, it is used for it. Either way, if you have qwest be careful, i'm trying to get the word out so nobody else goes through the irritation that I did. |
