I would consider myself a deist or agnostic but an atheist at heart. My problem is I want to believe that there is a higher power or life after death but I don't see any evidence for it. I really can't support any religious institution because the majority of them Christianity/Bible in particular are discredited. I simply can't believe anything the Bible says and I don't agree with the majority of what "God" says in it. |

I look at Jesus (if he even existed) as a philosopher. The ironic thing is he was opposed to the church as a place, with priests, who you give money to. His view was that if people wanted to warship a higher power that they should do it in their hearts with those around them. The hypocrisy of Christianity in general existing in a church always struck me funny. Dawkins sums it up best for me. I am certain there is no god in the same way that I am certain there are no fairies in my backyard. One, can never truly be 100% certain about anything, but I am willing to bet my life and afterlife on it. Besides, if there was a god, he would be more disgusted than the me and my fellow Atheists with organized religion. |

Well let me begin by saying that I do identify with Christianity, Jesus and the Bible more then any other religion. But this can be explained by the fact that I grew up in a non diverse small middle American town where there were only about 6 churches all Christian. My mom is Catholic but I've never stepped foot in a catholic church thanks to my dad who is non-denominational, more into Asian/eastern philosophy. The main problem with me attending church is finding one so open. I would need to find a church that 1) Accepts to world is 12-15 billion years old 2) Evolution explains the diversity of the species 3) The Bible is not the literal word of God 4) Jesus is not the son of God or the only way into heaven. 4) There is no Hell. There are other things but as you can see it would be rather hard to find a church. I was never into tribalism or ritual anyway. I completely agree with you on the hypocrisy of Christianity and 3 fold concerning Catholics. I have no doubt if Jesus did come back the Catholics would crucify him. It's kinda funny but if you look at Jesus's sermon on the mount (Text, Youtube) I really don't disagree with anything he says here save for 1 thing, Hell. Jesus brought hell into the mix. Even if God does exist I could not worship/pray to/serve/obey/follow/etc etc a deity that created a Hell. I find the thought of it so evil so appalling that if I were to meet Jesus(assuming he could prove to me he was Jesus and not Odin or Thor fucking with me) when I die and he told me there is a hell I still could not follow him knowing that there is a Hell and he created it. |

Born and raised Christian. Eventually turned agnostic as I became more educated... I definitely can see myself becoming an atheist down the road, but... religion is one of the things I don't give a shit about, so whatever. |

I don't believe in god. Let's say god exist and you could ask him one question. What would it be? I would be like "Why did you let your son die?" |

Among other things, I don't believe that Sodom and Gomorrah means Christians should hate homosexuals. In essence, it is the liberal wing of the Protestant church. We drink booze and dance. The fundie's beliefs are a little too archaic for me. I also don't believe in going out to "convert the masses" or that the Bible is the word of God. Cuz, lets face it. Some fellas wrote it. Basically, progressive christianity is the antithesis of Evangelicalism's social conservatism.

How can you believe in Christianity when its clearly shown in history that the religion had its origins in previous myths and superstitious god images? One group of assholes decided the current myths weren't good enough and made another set. There is far more evidence in support against the idea of God than I could possibly post here. History, Anthropology, Psychology, Neurosciences, Physics, Astrophysics... all these fields have independent evidences that come together to prove the whole. The problem is people can't and often won't accept that explanation, because they have lived all their lives thinking they are living a higher purpose for God, and its not true. A tiny psyche would collapse under that realization, so millions of humans continually live in denial, and propagate that denial to their offspring...and we never get rid of that curse that is religion, mired in ignorance and illogical fallacy. |

I considered myself an atheist for a while, but then I reexamined myself and decided on my own to return to Christianity. I love how you act like we're all brainwashed. Y'all turn atheism into a religion. That is just as problematic. |

I can't stand it when people who are religious call Atheism a religion. A religion is an organized approach to human spirituality which usually encompasses a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices, often with a supernatural or transcendent quality, that give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life through reference to a higher power, God or gods, or ultimate truth. Atheism has no beliefs or practices, and we make no prescriptions for anything supernatural. We don't procure meaning of life through a higher power or God. Which means it doesn't fit the definition of a religion. No myths to follow, no made up God in the sky... just science and reasoning, cold hard facts. We're militant about it because we're tired of people who believe in invisible assholes in the sky dictating how we should talk or live our lives. If they want to live out their existence indulging delusions and believing in something that isn't there, that's fine... but keep the craziness to yourself, stop involving the rest of humanity. |

You're completely right in saying that atheism is an active non-belief. Where do you procure meaning in your life? You know what I'm tired of? I'm tired of the false snobbery that most atheists reek of. You act like religion causes everything negative in the world, when you contribute as much as those who believe. I think this comes from their absolutism (that's what I meant by atheism becoming a religion), which, is something that those who are moderately religious lack. I cannot speak for fundamentalism, but, for example, theology is constantly evolving. Atheism is not. Atheism is stagnant. This may or may not be positive, but stop looking at your fucking shoes. Why do you think your atheism makes you better than me? |
