So I decided I'm joining the Army and I have taken my ASVAB but I still need to take my physical etc. Needless to say I rocked it and pretty much qualify for anything I want. I just got back from the recruiters station and they want to reserve a MOS(job) for me. These are the top jobs I picked. I decide what one I want to put in my contract on Friday. I was offered. (One of these would be in my contract) 18x (Special Forces Candidate) http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=344 - 8000 dollar bonus - Airborne and Air Assault School - Opt 40 (ranger indoc) 37f (Psychological Operations Specialist) http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=7 89D (Ordnance Disposal) http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=147 - 25000 dollar bonus 68w (Health Care Specialist) (medic) http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=150 - No bonus - Student loan repayment - Tuition reimbursement (apart from GI bill) - Airborne For some reason I'm planning on EOD. I can change it at anytime between now and fri-sat. But EOD is what I reserved. The 25k is a nice bonus too my recruiter told me EOD has a pretty high re enlistment bonus to..like 30-40k. I leave for basic in oct. and my AIT(advanced individual training) for EOD is 39 weeks long. The only thing is SF sounds pretty cool but the recruiter told me if I wash out I'm pretty much stuck in the infantry. Edited by Casino, Jun 3 2009, 06:32 PM.

[jealous] Congratulations. I would've went into the military if I was a hearing person. While one may argue that the army does indeed take anyone that can hold a gun (no confirmation on this, but some of my deaf friends were rejected from the army, so...) - the fact that I'm deaf has taken my life in a different direction - aka gaming all the damn time instead of doing sports (boxing/football concentration). Yes, I know that deaf people can box and play football, but it is kinda risky - in boxing, how will I know to stop fighting?, or in football, how will I know that the ref. has blown his whistle? Yes, I can still use my implant while playing football, but it's risky and I've played baseball - the hat made the implant fall off or move just a centimeter from the magnet under my skin and made me not hear until I took off the hat, and put it back in it's needed location. As a result, being deaf has made me somewhat a crappy (meaning physically weaker as a result of not having a life devoted to sports and in the future, the military - and not being able to use voice comms as well as hearing people) asset if I was to ever join the military - but if I was hearing, I would've joined the military (probably the marines or the army - preference to marines, however) to continue my family's military line. Again, congratulations, I wish you luck on your army-related crap, and will say so again if you create a thread to say your temporary good-byes in October. Pretty cool website that lays out the training for EOD, if I decide to stay with it. http://www.753eod.com/school.aspx I'm pretty sure the ARMY, Airforce and NAVY all go to the school. But for the NAVY I think EOD is apart of the special forces so you do more training before you go to the school in Florida. Edited by Casino, Jun 4 2009, 07:34 AM.

I got accepted to the Air Force Academy my senior year of High School, sort of glad I didn't go. I'm too much of a pussy anyway. Do whatever gets you the most cash and look into officer's training, otherwise being in the enlisted military is about as close to serfdom as you can get in the modern world. |

Um, all I know is my buddy was in Ordinance Disposal, and he did NOT enjoy crawling up to suspected IEDs several times a week when he was in Iraq. Not only is there a very good chance the thing will go off if the person who set it up is watching what's happening with a trigger, but they took sniper fire and had pot shots taken at them with AKs a lot. |
