I'm not going to bother making a poll since I would probably not know about these little MMOs coming out that like 1 or 2 people would poll on. So far I've heard of: -Mortal Online -Aion Online -Star Wars: the Old Republic ? (or was it Knights of the Old Republic?...) -Darkfall -Black Prophecy I'm not going to go into detail about them except for the new one I've heard of: Black Prophecy. I'll summarize the others, however. MO - Medieval MMO, tries to revive the Ultima Online rulesets with new, fancy graphics to bring the old UO players back. AO - Honestly, I don't know about this one. It has 3 factions, two are player-populated and the third being NPC-controlled. You can fly. SW:TOR - it's best that I leave this up to someone else that is following this game, since I know 0% about anything in this game. DO - Medieval MMO, interesting ranged combat system in which the player with the best sense of applied physics turns out to be great in. BP - alright, this is new. I was informed by a friend about this, he forwarded me to an article on kotaku. I find it to be very interesting. The gaming industry has finally realized that there is no space shooter MMO. The only closest thing to a true space shooter MMO is EVE Online, but it's more of a space strategy MMO rather than a shooter one. I suggest that you watch the trailer in the link - it gives you a nice idea about how they are constructing a true space shooter MMO. I, for one, am excited for this because it promotes unpredictability, which is the leading factor to winning pvp fights. Any player can go in any direction (and any degree) in a sphere, so... it would be very hard to shoot down someone that has an optical mouse that he's grinding all over the desk, making his patterns very erratic. I'm personally waiting for Mortal Online. I really wanted to play Ultima Online, but after a week of playing it... the only thing that repelled me from the game was it's 2D Graphics similar to Diablo 1 and 2. It wasn't very appealing. Now, this game brings it back on a 3D level, and I'm enthusiastic for it. Not enough to die for it, however. Thoughts? What are you waiting for? p.s. first post on these forums, weeee |

I'll do you a favor and just copy/paste the OP from the megathread for all those on the SA boards. Most of em should contain a decent bit of info that I'm sure no one here really wants to take the time to type up, myself included. And I added JGE and TERA too. -- MORTAL ONLINE -- http://i35.tinypic.com/30ii6vn.jpg Watch the trailer here: Mortal Online Trailer Also, you can check out some newly released screenshots here: Mortal Online Screenshots What is Mortal Online? Mortal Online is an MMO in development by Star Vault. Mortal Online is a MMO developed by old school UO players who want a sandbox style of MMO to hit the mainstream. Mortal Online uses the Unreal 3 Engine and they hope to release by late 2009 or early 2010. I'll believe that this game exists and could possibly come out when I see some beta footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBflAPdVwZQ Starting at 5:25 for about 15 seconds. Its not a lot but at least its a look at the alpha footage. What inspirations does the game draw from? The developers were inspired by Ultima Online for many of their gameplay decisions. Can I get into beta? No, not yet, but they plan on announcing beta at a later date. As a sidenote, the developers of this game are incredibly responsive. They have outright said that those who make themselves useful on the boards will get into the beta. If you are interested in getting into the beta, helping out newbies and being active on the boards would be a good thing. What is the level system for the game? There are no levels, it is very similar to a UO skill based game as well as stats. Within the skill system there are two groups. You have primary skills and secondary skills. Primary skills are things like acrobatics, brawling, craftsmanship, leadership, light weapons, ranged weapons, etc. All characters have these skills from the start, and you may level up in them as you feel like. There is a skill cap in the game, but currently you may untrain as often as you like. (Of course you have to rank back up in the things you want.) Secondary skills are more complicated, they may have prerequisites from attributes, primary skills, other secondary skills, or a combination of the three. Secondary skills include things like climbing, hiding, stealth, etc. Secondary skills currently do not have a cap, but if you untrain in a primary skill that is a prerequisite then you will lose the secondary skill as well. The attributes are pretty straightforward. You get strength, dexterity, constitution, etc. Here is a picture just to make things a bit easier. http://i37.tinypic.com/1zg5e2c.jpg What sort of features are planned for this game?
What races can I play? There will be more races announced soon, but they've announced three so far. As of now, you can play the Half-orc, Tindremene, and the Khurites. The Tindremene are the conquering empire type race, the Khurites are more of a Mongolian tribal society, and the Half-orcs are the hated and misunderstood race. The Forest Elves and Sidoian races have just been recently announced, but no info yet. There will be more races announced later. Are there a lot of spells? There has been a fair amount of confusion on this, because at one point a post outlining magic seems to indicate that there are only twenty Battle Magic spells. To clarify, Battle Magic is one of twelve planned schools of magic. They have not currently announced any other schools of magic yet, all we know is that there will be twelve of them. What kind of flagging system does Mortal Online have? From the Mortal Online site.
Can I get some details on the combat system? The combat system involves manual targeting and aiming with a stamina bar in play for running, jumping, and attacking. Attacks are charged and they longer they are charged the more damage they do. There is both manual blocking which relies on player skill, as well as a small chance to autoblock. In the alpha phase of the game so far they have up to ten hitboxes which means accurate hit detection. For more information on the combat system refer to this thread.. Mortal Online Combat System Where can I go for more information about Mortal Online? Note: All information in these topics are subject to change. Mortal Online Q&A #1 Mortal Online Q&A #2 Mortal Online Information Summary -- AION -- Most people haven't heard of this game at all. It is being developed by a team at NCSoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCsoft), the same company that made Lineage 2, Guild Wars, and City of Heroes. A quick description of pre-beta informations can be found at its wiki page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aion_%28computer_game%29. If you want more up to date information, read on. Straight up, this is probably the prettiest MMO I've ever seen: it uses a modified Crysis engine and the result is something absolutely stunning. You have to see this for yourself: Environments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpYGioghReo Sampling of character emotes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD5rmmw4DPs Armor look and feel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCQ0HQjalQ8 Quest boss fight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11H58brq7k8 Right now the game is in Korean beta and very little is coming out of the testers that isn't good. The worst criticisms involve minor polishing issues (odd animation glitches, skill triggers, etc) and that there isn't too much that screams NEW at the player, though the beta is currently capped well below where players will reach much of the game-defining content. Overall, in week 2 beta one of the most common comments seems to be how stable and finished the game feels, which has me hopeful. The game is based on a three faction RvR setup with one of the three factions being computer controlled adding raid options and what appears to be an interesting strategy angle: the computer faction, the Balaur, will at times ally with one player faction or the other to accomplish their own goals, though what this entirely entails at this point is unknown. Endgame consists of raids on opposing faction targets (think the alliance WoW quest on the blightcaller: http://thottbot.com/q6187), RvR castle/siege warfare over strategic areas, and instanced RvR raids (think an Onyxia raid where the opposing faction comes in and you end up in a three way fight). It appears they're trying to take the best parts of Lineage 2, DAoC, and WoW, and create a winner out of it. NOTE: Unlike WoW where there is a pretty faction and a fugly faction, the factions are split on "Angel" and "Demon" lines in this game. Angels are like those in the videos above. The demons are reminiscent of the Draenei in WoW, though without the retarded chestlines or backs or tails or whatnot. A good example of this difference can be found on the korean game site under races here: http://aion.plaync.co.kr/introduction/clan/, though no in game pictures of the "demon" race have been shown at this point of beta. You start as a person on one faction or the other separated completely from the other faction. Leveling is mostly quest driven a la WoW, though you can grind it at similar speed without gaining the rewards from the quests. At level 10 your player's primary questline leads you to the realization that you're not just a person, but a Daeva, an immortal demigod-like being that has wings and magical abilities. Yay you! Leveling from 1 to 10 takes about 5 hours of casual gameplay, from beta reports, though this may change in release. Wings: while they're trying not to make "WoW with wings", your toon can fly on a timer (your wings pop into existance) at certain intervals and you can have aerial combat. Certain skills will only be available when in flight, and some of the videos of this are pretty amazing. You can get a glimpse of this at around 6:50 and on in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMlcbSCQXpo. From 10-50 (cap level) they are saying will take about a month of moderate play, so I'd guess the leveling curve is similar to WoW and will be mostly quest driven. As you move on you'll have options to travel to the opposing faction's lands for PvP action or to the "endgame" area, the Abyss, where the main RvR campaign is focused. You can apparently level doing PvP, for those that like this option. I want to stress the leveling curve: though the Lineage 2 devs made this, they were extremely careful not to make this a "Korean grinder". You character chooses one of eight main classes with skillsets that you can focus on and customize to your tastes as you level up. Respecs and whatnot are unknown variables at this time. There are two "tank" classes, one offensive and one defensive. There is an assassin class (think rogue), a ranger class (think hunter sans pet plus minor heals and roots), a mage class, a summoner class, a priest class (combat priest o.O), and a chanter (think the bastard child of a red mage and a bard). You can further customize your toon with "stygma", or stones that allow you to add skills to your character you wouldn't ordinarily have. You want a mage that wears plate and carries a giant fucking axe? You want a rogue that teleports and has some heals? Yeah, that kind of customization. Toons on beta are capped at 15, so they haven't been able to mess around with stygma yet, so it is yet to be seen if this will make things unbalanced. As for customization, all gear can be combined with your old gear to use the new stats and the old look. No more will you upgrade out of a bad ass sword to some rusted epic stick or swap your shiny gold boots for pink chainmail socks to get new benefits. Guilds can actually use this system, apparently, to make guild "uniforms" to make them stand out on the battlefield. Gear can be found, gained as rewards, or crafted: apparently the crafted gears using supplies gained from RvR combat are supposed to be the highest tier of gear you can get. As of yet the best source I've found for information in english like translated korean beta reviews, screenshots, and video links is at http://www.aionsource.com/forum/cmps_index.php so far. This game seems to be the best kept secret in the MMO world, considering it is slated for an english beta in a couple months and release in 1Q/2Q 2008. Anyone else watching this game at all? -- STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC -- http://www.swtor.com Star Wars: The Old Republic was confirmed to be in production in July of 2008 after a year of rumors surrounding Bioware and how it was supposedly working on Star Wars IP. Bioware has chosen to use the HeroEngine a robust engine designed to develop MMO games. SW:TOR is the first AAA title to use the highly touted engine, which includes collaborative tools that allow developers to update the game in real-time simultaneously. Currently announced as PC only title there isn't any speculation that it will be released on any consoles. What we know so far: Confirmed Classes Bounty Hunter Sith Jedi Rumored Classes (so far) None Setting 300 Years after KOTOR, 3,500 years before the Star Wars films Plot The writing team is said to include 12 full-time writers, based on videos and interviews the core story seams to revolve around skirmishes between the Jedi and Sith. After losing control of Coruscant, the Jedi and Sith have operated under an uneasy truce, which is now bordering on collapse. This of course leads to speculation about PVP and zone control, but this hasn't really been discussed at this time. Story BioWare claims that each class will have its own distinct storyline integrated with the overall game storyarc. Other quotes have mentioned that no class will share quests with any other class. Planets It is said players will have access to many planets, so far only four have been mentioned in any detail: Coruscant, Tython, Korriban and Hutta Planets that have been mentioned but have had no further detail: Alderran, Utapau, Agamar, Dathomir, and Manaan. Leveling It has not yet been confirmed if character advancement will Level- or Skill-based or some hybrid. Media Threat of Peace Web Comic: http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomic Latest Video Documentary: http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/video-documentary-2 LinksThanks, Enjoy Everything October 21, 2008 IGN post-announcement article(includes information on the companion system and mentions of many story arcs) October 21, 2008 Gamespot post-announcement article(Interview with Lead Designer and some info on the origin of the project, EA's involvement and what they've been doing for the last two years) October 22, 2008 October Kotaku Info Summary and Interview with Lead Writer Daniel Erickson (information on quest philosophy, minor information crafting and where the writing staff is going) -- DARKFALL ONLINE -- Already out -- Google a wiki, servers are all EU based, available to NA though -- BLACK PROPHECY -- This game looks promising. http://www.blackprophecy.com/ Introduction Black Prophecy is to be an action orientated Sci-Fi MMO [1] and is currently in the development cycle with Reakktor Media GMbH and will be published through 10Tacle Media. The current engine being used with Black Prophecy is the Gamebryo 2.3 engine, which has gained acclaim from lots of the gaming community, and press (see the quotes section below). Fighters are known to consist of around 20,000 polygons, which is some of the largest number of polygons within an object in any MMO currently on the market. Planets can have different types of terrain on them, water will show reflected light from the local star, and the celestial bodies can be seen to rotate, and clouds cast shadows on the surfaces. Storyline and Mission Mechanics Set in the 26th century, mankind has expanded across the galaxy, however only some of the colonies are controlled by "Humans", the true rulers are the cybernetically enhanced Tyi and the biogenetically perfected Genides. The intense fighting to control all of the human species drives them into the territories of a hostile ancient alien race, who don't tolerate other cosmic civilisations, called the "Restorers". Players are forced to join one of the two dominant human races, and the search for the origin of the Restorers becomes a race for the survival of all three human species. Even though the game will be a fast action game, it has been stated that there will be a deep storyline running throughout the game written by sci-fi writer "Michael Marrak", which will run through both single and multiplayer missions throughout the game. Missions will be instanced, to stop interference from the other players on the server [2]. Many missions will be in the local reaches of planetry atmospheres, rings which encircle certain planets are fully rendered within 3D and can be piloted through. Races The game is known to consist of four races, only two of which will be playable (Tyi and Genides): Humans * The ever struggling human race, always seeking survival for mankind. * Only a few colonies are controlled by humans. Tyi * Cybernetically enhanced (humans?), also claimed to be the "True Rulers". * May be expected to have superior technology compared to the humans. Genides * Biogenetically perfected (humans?). Both the Tyi and Genides seeks total control over the human race. * We dont know if there's any kind of alliance between the two factions. The Restorers * Ancient alien race that does not tolerate other cosmic civilizations. * The Tyi and Genides have been in contact with these aliens (or at least the lead story wants us to believe that this has taken place). Ships The fighters players fly will be customizable with modules purchased from players and NPCs, key items will be given through mission rewards. There are 30 skills which will be upgradable over time - it is unknown at this time whether this means that the skills will level themselves over time, or whether it will be experience based. Fighters carriers and other capital ships will be pilotable, in battles of up to 300 users, for resources and control of important space stations, this implies that space stations will be capturable for your clan/race. Victory and defeat of every battle affects the well-being of your faction and influences the whole game world. Capture precious resources to improve your ship, your space station and the power of your Clan. Clans Following on from their first game (Neocron) Reakktor are looking to continue in focusing largely on the clan (guild) based systems within the game, clans will be able to develop their own space stations and outfit it as they wish, they will also be able to utilise the largest ships requiring more than one person to pilot. It has also been stated that Reakktor has developed its own clan server technology, however at the moment the reasoning, and features behind this are unknown. Music Reakktor has employed a company called dynamedion to develop the musical score, IGN wrote that the music has engaging, orchestral and operatic soundtrack being mixed by a Hollywood engineer who worked on The Matrix Trilogy and I, Robot. The fanfare is similar to action movie soundtracks like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in both timbre and quality. Alex Pfeffer has confirmed that he has worked on some of the score, and has been quoted in saying part of the music from the trailer (see media below), time stamp 1:02 to the end, was composed by himself - he works for dynamedion. Dynamedion has received industrial awards for the quality of their game soundtracks, and worked with Reakktor previously for the Neocron 2 soundtrack. Outsourced Work * Rocketbox: creation of 165 spaceship modules, 70 weapons, 5 space stations module systems, 5 level locations, 27 character models (without heads) * Intulo: Real-time characters, 3D-models and textures. * Dynamedion: Audio effects. * Polyzoom: Character texturing. * Digimain / VIR2LART: Backdrop screens. Platforms Currently the game has been developed for the PC market, however Reakktor are hoping to port the game to the Xbox 360. Currently the game will work with a Xbox 360 controller on the PC [2] - however this has not been confirmed for the final release. -- T.E.R.A. -- Anyone heard of this? It was previously referred to as "ProjectS1". It's Korean, and looking to go into beta in Asia this summer, and in North America in 2010 maybe. It looks absolutely amazing in my opinion: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45395.html But oddly enough, even Googling several varieties of the name after a friend showed me the trailer can't bring up shit for news on it. I suppose a lot of that has to do with the fact that most news is still in Korean, and google and obscure new acronyms for game titles don't get along all that great. I did find the games website via the dev studio's website: http://tera.hangame.com/ But despite the buttons being in English, the info on the game is not, and it's in a flash interface, so I can't even try using google translate on it. Bluehole's site has a decent bit of English info on the game, but that's about all I'm finding. http://www.bluehole.net/eng/index.html I'm guessing as a Korean game, it will have two things for sure though. A grind, and PvP. And from the trailer, something that looks like an ewok fucked a raccoon and then the offspring learned to wield a bardiche. -- JUMPGATE: EVOLUTION -- [timg]http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q198/Hezzy88/JGE/JumpgateEvolution_full-color-alp-2.png[/timg] Let me tell you about this wonderful game. You might have heard of it's predecessor, Jumpgate. This is a game planned for release later this year and features EPIC SPACE COMBAT that is based on SKILL rather than a RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR or DICE ROLLS or WHATEVERother MMOs use. You actually fly your craft. None of that POINT CLICK SHOOT WAIT stuff that's in another certain space MMO. It plays more like a space combat simulator. It is developed by NetDevil. You may find that name familiar, as they are better known for producing the mediocre Auto Assault. They're learning from their mistakes and so far JGE is shaping up to be a brilliant game. I have played a beta version of this at a game conference and I must say I am very impressed with it. I can't wait for it to come out. Without further ado, here's some content ripped straight from the fansite kit! GAME OVERVIEW Jumpgate Evolution is the definitive space combat massively multiplayer online, putting you at the heart of the action as you embark on your mission to explore the galaxy and progress from space rookie to elite commander. Taking the best elements of MMOs and combining it with the speed and agility of the arcade, Jumpgate is a fun, highly accessible, action-orientated, space combat MMO, putting players straight into the heat of the action. Offering full online player vs player (PvP) or player vs environment (PvE) gamplay, Jumpgate’s expansive and versatile universe allows players to forge their own destiny as they fight for survival in this space epic. GAME FEATURES • Fun, Intuitive Gameplay Taking the best elements from the space action genre bringing them into a fully online universe with thousands of players from across the world. • Highly Accessible Although graphically stunning, Jumpgate is highly scaleable, allowing the game to run flawlessly on low end PCs. Jumpgate also offers full joystick / peripheral support, adding to the immersive experience as never seen before in any previous MMO. • Huge Space Battles Fight against thousands of players online in epic large-scale player vs player real-time battles. • Action Based Space Combat Enter this world of adrenaline fuelled space combat as you fight against thousands of players to rise from amongst the many to become the elite commander. • Explore the Galaxy, Forge your Destiny Want to be a space pirate? Now that we have a ton of info out there, I'm gonna say the ones I'm actually interested in are MO, SW:TOR, and TERA. If TERA plays like L2 for PvP, but more like WoW (non instanced) for PvE, that would be a great, great, great game, imo. And that's what it sounds like they're trying to make. The big question is how many years will it take for that game to launch and then how many more will it take for that game to go NA, if it ever does make it out of the Asian market at all. MO sounds cool because it's supposed to play like old school UO. The question there will be if it does or if they cut too many corners trying to make the WoW crowd that will inevitably invade their beta tests happy. And well SW:TOR, fuck man, it's Star Wars. Although I'd rather jedi and force enabled characters be not playable. If they're as powerful as they SHOULD be, players shouldn't be able to play them as it'd be unbalancing. And there are rumblings and rumors that Bioware is looking at microtransaction plans. If they go microtransaction instead of flat sub fee, you can pretty much count me completely out of that one. Jumpgate Evolution I was looking at really seriously, and then they backed off of FFA PvP all over to make it more consensual, and now they are backing off death penalties to the point of making them pretty much non-existant. Basically it's sounding like it will be WoW in space. Pointless as all get out. Count me out. |

Well, no, you actually play with a joystick (you could do mouse control too, like flying in BF2 or whatever) and it's twitch to a fairly large extent, so WAY different than EVE. But yeah, then they pussified it. If it was just EVE with a joystick instead of the lock, activate, wait that EVE is now, that would have been great.

The only MMO that looks interesting to me is Star Wars: the Old Republic atm. What does microtransaction mean? Is it like you pay real money for gear/mounts/shit instead of monthly subscription? |

That's what it most usually means. Who knows exactly what variant of it they are considering though. Or the initial backlash from a year ago when the quote that said they were looking into it got out may have turned them away from going that way with it already. Holy shit that's the least coherent sentence I've ever written. |

It will spike pretty soon (as always) with summer vacation coming up. The the inflow of players will only temporarily overcome the outflow of the disgruntled and disappointed (if the scales even tilt at all in that direction). |

That sucks to hear, i had my eye on that one for a while now. Alot of mmo's are going the micro transaction way now, most with a sorta hybrid, like you can play for free, or pay x a month and get x, pay x more and get X etc etc, i personally dont really like the buisness model, but i cant argue with how effective it is, which i why i expect to see alot more going this route in future. |

I would have to completely agree. We can thank the Koreans and Chinese for this. But can you blame the companies. Who knows how many millions of dollars are spent on buying currency in online games. They just want to cut out the middle men. EvE's solution was probably the best I have seen so far. CCP (the company that owns EvE) runs an online trading system where you can exchange Game Time Cards for in game currency. The price is negotiated by the participants, and because it is transacted by the developers no one gets ripped off. |
